Maori people have there own new year called Matariki, matariki occured when the 9 sisters raise in winter or sometimes early june and late may.Traditionally matariki was used to predict success for the coming season,if the stars shine bright,then there will be better scrops. Matariki is a great time for making worven crafts and kites.
